Social workers must develop a thorough understanding of community structure and dynamics
before actively intervening in a community. They develop an understanding of the community by
gathering information from a variety of sources and critically analyzing the collected information.
Careful analysis of community data provides an essential foundation for effective intervention.
For the community analysis paper, each student is expected to:
Select a geographic community for study, using guidelines discussed in class ( please reference your paper based on an issue in Durham NC). if you can’t please base it off of something from NC in general to find pictures and evidence/ charts, etc.
Base the profile on a combination of observation printed information, and interviews conducted.
-Gather printed information from a variety of sources such as city and/or county, the government, a local planning council, neighborhood associations, public library, local newspapers, and relevant Internet Web sites.
-Conduct interviews with several community residents and leaders to identify potential community problems/issues and resources which exist in the community
-Students may use maps and photos to illustrate issues in the community. For example, photos of the schools, churches, or hospitals can indicate the major factors of the community. The photos must have captions.
-Must have references for the resources/photos/ data at the end of paper.

A process recording is a written tool field education experience students, field instructors, and faculty use to examine the dynamics of social work interactions in time. Process recordings can help in developing and refining interviewing and intervention skills. By conceptualizing and organizing ongoing activities with social work clients, you are able to clarify the purpose of interviews and interventions, identify personal and professional strengths and weaknesses, and improve self-awareness. The process recording is also a useful tool in exploring the interpersonal dynamics and values operating between you and the client system through an analysis of filtering the process used in recording a session.
For this Assignment, you will submit a process recording of your field education experiences specific to this week.

1. Provide a transcript of what happened during your field education experience, including a dialogue of interaction with a client.
2. Explain your interpretation of what occurred in the dialogue, including social work practice or theories, and explain how it might relate to evaluation covered this week.
3. Describe your reactions and/or any issues related to your interaction with a client during your field education experience.
4. Explain how you applied social work practice skills when performing the activities during your process recording.
