Any impacts from human development or other human activity?

Final Project Presentation – INST 115 100 Points
Students will create a presentation summarizing their cities research. Students will present and discuss their data and ultimately select their ideal city to live and work in based on their findings and personal preferences. The presentation should include analysis of their data to demonstrate why they chose their specific city over the other two cities.
The Final Project Presentation will be posted to the course website for other students to view. To “present” their work, students must upload their file or link to the appropriate discussion board forum. No audio or video recording required – just a PowerPoint slide show or other similar presentation mode. Afterward, students will be able to view all presentations in the discussion forum and will be required to leave feedback for at least three of their peers. See rubric for detailed grading criteria.
PRESENTATION FORMAT
✓ PowerPoint, Prezi, or other format with instructor approval (student may choose format) ✓ General guidelines (see rubric for specific grading criteria):
o Well-organizedwithlogicalandclearflowofcontent
o Freeofgrammarandspellingerrors
o Appropriatelayout&formatting(readabletextfontandsize,appropriate&non-distractingcolor
choices & graphics, etc.)
PRESENTATION REQUIREMENTS
INTRODUCTION OF ALL CITIES
Include the following data for all three selected cities:
✓ ID your occupation choice and three selected cities
✓ Include table of employment & wage data collection for cities
✓ Geographic coordinates for three selected cities
✓ Maps of the cities using Google Maps or Google Earth (satellite imagery) ✓ Total population of cities
TOP CITY PREFERENCE TO LIVE/WORK IN
Provide the following information for the single city you chose as your top preference:
✓ ID your preferred city
✓ Physical Geography and hazards for city ✓ Climate and weather data
✓ Cultural Geography data
✓ Political Geography data
✓ Economic Geography data
WHY DID YOU CHOOSE YOUR SELECTED CITY?
Describe why you chose your specific city over all of the cities you researched for this project:
Tell us why the city appealed to you. Compare it with the other cities based on the research and data you collected for each city. This includes the employment and wage data as well as the other geographic data you collected and analyzed. (For example, you could discuss pros and cons, discuss push and pull factors, etc.) Within this section, don’t forget to describe and discuss specific aspects you liked about your city and what you did not like about the other cities.
FUTURE CHALLENGES FOR YOUR SELECTED CITY?
You might have to do some additional research for this section…
Based on what you have learned about your city and course content discussed over the semester, describe potential concerns and issues the city might have in the near and long-term future. (For example, consider any current hazards or hazards that might worsen over time. Any impacts from climate change? Any impacts from human development or other human activity? Sustainable growth and development plans? Etc.) You might have to do some additional research for this section.
In addition, describe how any of those challenges might impact your decision to stay in the city.
Finally, are there any changes that you hope to see in the city that would make it more appealing to you and/or encourage you to stay in the city in the long-term?
CITATIONS
✓ Must include citations for data or any direct quotes on slides as appropriate ✓ Include a final references slide at the end of your presentation
PEER FEEDBACK (Included in Final Project Presentation grade)
✓ Provide constructive feedback and/or comments to at least three classmates’ projects

What is the climate, and are there any specific economic activities that you want to add (ex: Minnesota is a corn and soybean state)?

You are to choose a topic to present in a three-page term paper.
Introduce me to the landscape of a region, a landform you feel is important, the culture of a region, whether it is mixed or a more specific cultural region. What religions are found in specific regions? What is the climate, and are there any specific economic activities that you want to add (ex: Minnesota is a corn and soybean state)? What urban settlements do you see – how large are they and what do they have to offer. Are they cultural centers or is there a unique aspect of the city (you can choose an urban area such as New Orleans that has a lot of history and culture).
You may choose to write about the Colorado River and its many issues or its history. The First Nation people of Canada, or the Native American people of the United States. Alberta Oil Shale, Fracking in the United States, Secession in Quebec, Texas, or California.
You are welcome to choose a province or territory in Canada or you can choose a state or region of the U.S. You may not choose the regions as described in the text.
You can also choose to focus on a group of people in the United States. An example would be the people of Somalia. The Somali population in Minnesota is the largest in the United States, with a large group in Minneapolis and another in Mankato. If you were to choose this group, tell me about who they are and how and why they got here. Where is the Somali population in Canada?
This paper should be 3 pages long, double spaced. That does not include a reference page, which will be a 4th page.
Use a minimum of three sources, with no more than one of them Wikipedia.
Be sure you use a reasonable font that is not too large or too small. Choose Times Roman, Calibri, or something similar in 12-point font. 1-inch-wide margins.
Do not use 1/2 of your first page when adding a heading.
You are welcome to add pictures and you should add at least one map.
The written portion of the paper should be 3 pages. Any graphics are not included in this 3 page amount. Spelling and sentence structure will be noted in this assignment. Make sure you use spellcheck to correct.
for any errors.
Use MLA citation style and include the URLs for all online sources.

How important was the location to the storyline?

The point of this exercise is to provide you with one more lens into the region through those who
live and work there using film. In this exercise students will choose a film made in Latin
America (i.e. not a Hollywood film taking place in Latin America so for example films such as
“Man on Fire”, “Proof of Life” are not acceptable). If you have are unsure whether a film is
acceptable or not, please consult with me in advance. Films can provide an educational window
into a particular geography, exaggerate certain elements of a place to make it seem surreal, or
mostly ignore that place giving the viewer the impression that it could be occurring anywhere.
Students are required to write a 2-3 page, single-spaced review and critique of a film, with the
review focusing on the role of place and integrating two themes or concepts from the course. The
structure of the paper should be divided into two parts as follows: 1) a one to two paragraph
summary of the film (NO MORE THAN THAT-THERE IS A GOOD CHANCE I HAVE ALSO
SEEN THE FILM, SO DON’T NEED A RECAP); and 2) a critique of the role of place in the
film. The following questions are intended to guide through this part of the exercise: Where did
the film occur? How important was the location to the storyline? What did you learn about this
place because of the film? Do you feel this place was misrepresented in anyway? If so, how? If
not, why not? Also, try to identify aspects of the film that helped to depict the place (e.g
architecture, clothing, landscapes). Your grade will be based largely on how well you discuss the
role of place should include such things as: architecture, clothes, food, street scenes, as well as
cultural elements such as the role of gender, religion, or anything else that might be relevant to
the storyline.
Here are a few suggestions: Central Station, Amores Perros, City of God, Strawberry and
Chocolate, Guantanamera, Y Tu Mama Tambien, The Motorcycle Diaries, Buena Vista Social
Club, Amores Perros, Maria Full of Grace, Sugar, Rudo y Cursi, The Violin, Sin Nombre,
Behind the Sun, Silent Light, Like Water for Chocolate, Elite Squad, House of Sand, Bus 174,
God is Brazilian, Wild Tales, The Crime of Padre Amaro, Trash, A Fantastic Woman, Roma,
and many, many more.
Obviously, there are many more that would be appropriate but please be sure that the film is
foreign (non-US) directed and produced.
