Read this New York Times article (see link below) by author James Gorman which will introduce you to the idea of DIY biology. After reading it proceed with the activities below.
Part 1: Using your understanding of DNA technology and evolution, summarize changes that would need to take place in order to create organisms such as the Jabberjay and mockingjay.
Part 2: Conduct further research into the idea of DIY biology and genetic engineering. Briefly summarize your findings and provide a specific bioengineering example. Cite references using MLA format.
Part 3: State your opinion of the DIYbio movement and whether you believe government regulation or publishing restrictions should be put into place. Why or why not? Provide specific evidence and a logical argument to support your opinion. Simply stating you ′feel′ or ′believe′ something is insufficient justification.
Your essay should be prepared and cited using MLA format. Submit your final work as a single document.

3. Compare your intake to the recommendations. a) Comment on how close you are to the recommendations for each nutrient and b) discuss what steps you could take to reach the recommendations. For example, mention foods that you may want to eliminate or incorporate into your diet to get you closer to the recommendations.

1. In this unit, you learn about macronutrients: protein, carbohydrates, and fats. Many people have suggested that focusing on one macronutrient at the expense of others would be a superior diet. Thus, we have high-protein diets, high-carbohydrate diets, and high-fat diets. On the flip side, we also have low-fat diets, low-carb diets, and so on. In addition to these, there are other versions such as a gluten-free diet (which is necessary for those truly allergic to wheat), a vegan diet, a raw food diet, and even a blood type diet that is based on particular blood types. Reflect on your eating habits. Which type of diet do you prefer? Why do you prefer this type of diet to other diet options?
Your journal entry must be at least 200 words in length. No references or citations are necessary.

Compare the nutrition label for ground beef below to the nutrition label from any canned vegetable you may have in your pantry. Draw two graphs, each showing the activity of both Warm-Best and Cool-Best receptors. Indicate, on both graphs, the responses of these cells to 105o , 89o and 75o. The first graph should represent normal function. The second graph should show the change in the cells’ activity after the Selective Adaptation that occurs from holding your hand in hot 105o water for a prolonged period.
Will 89o feel warmer or cooler after this adaptation? WHY?
