Instructions
Read this New York Times article (see link below) by author James Gorman which will introduce you to the idea of DIY biology. After reading it proceed with the activities below.
Part 1: Using your understanding of DNA technology and evolution, summarize changes that would need to take place in order to create organisms such as the Jabberjay and mockingjay.
Part 2: Conduct further research into the idea of DIY biology and genetic engineering. Briefly summarize your findings and provide a specific bioengineering example. Cite references using MLA format.
Part 3: State your opinion of the DIYbio movement and whether you believe government regulation or publishing restrictions should be put into place. Why or why not? Provide specific evidence and a logical argument to support your opinion. Simply stating you ′feel′ or ′believe′ something is insufficient justification.
Your essay should be prepared and cited using MLA format. Submit your final work as a single document.

Determine the recommendations for carbohydrate, protein, fat and calorie intake for someone your age.

. Track your food intake for 24 hours and provide a summary that includes the foods you consumed and the amount of carbohydrate (g), protein (g), total fat (g) and calories you consumed. You can use a food calculator such as My Fitness Pal (https://myfitnesspal.com) or WebMD ( https://www.webmd.com/diet/healthtool-food-calorie-counter) to calculate your totals. (15 points)
2. Determine the recommendations for carbohydrate, protein, fat and calorie intake for someone your age. To find the recommendations, review the image below containing information taken from the Dietary Guidelines for Americans 2020-2025 (https://www.dietaryguidelines.gov). (10 points)

3. Compare your intake to the recommendations. a) Comment on how close you are to the recommendations for each nutrient and b) discuss what steps you could take to reach the recommendations. For example, mention foods that you may want to eliminate or incorporate into your diet to get you closer to the recommendations.

How do calcium ions regulate myofibrils to control muscle contraction?

Answer the 6 questions below. You are welcome to use whatever lecture materials, notes, or outside sources you wish to answer them, as long as you answer in your own words.
You have the potential to earn 30/25 points on this assignment.
If you choose to use a drawing or diagram in any of your answers, DO NOT copy-paste existing figures or diagrams. You must draw them yourself.
If you upload a file (pdf or Word document) please name the file containing your completed assignment as your name as it appears on iLearn. For example, name the file “Taylor Ray Smith” but with your own name.
How do calcium ions regulate myofibrils to control muscle contraction? (4 points)
EDTA is a chemical that chelates calcium ions—in other words, it binds calcium ions. Explain how EDTA promotes the dissociation of animal cell tissue. (4 points)
Design an experiment that would demonstrate that a KDEL sequence keeps an ER-resident protein in the ER. (5 points)
What is the function of a gap junction? Please describe or diagram an experiment to test the function of a gap junction. (5 points)
Cadherins are cell adhesion molecules important for the sorting of cells.
What sort of final architecture might you expect if you were to mix together two populations of cells that both express P-cadherin, but, in addition, one population expresses E-cadherin and the other expresses N-cadherin? (Population 1 expresses E and P, while Population 2 expresses N and P.) Describe or draw your answer. (3 points)
What would the final architecture look like if one population stopped expressing P-cadherin? Describe or draw your answer. (3 points)
Name two topics that we have covered during this class that confuse you the most and describe why they confuse you / what about each of them you find confusing. I will use your answers to design a review for the last class period before the final exam. (6 points)

Why do you prefer this type of diet to other diet options?

Learning Goal: I’m working on a biology writing question and need an explanation and answer to help me learn.
1. In this unit, you learn about macronutrients: protein, carbohydrates, and fats. Many people have suggested that focusing on one macronutrient at the expense of others would be a superior diet. Thus, we have high-protein diets, high-carbohydrate diets, and high-fat diets. On the flip side, we also have low-fat diets, low-carb diets, and so on. In addition to these, there are other versions such as a gluten-free diet (which is necessary for those truly allergic to wheat), a vegan diet, a raw food diet, and even a blood type diet that is based on particular blood types. Reflect on your eating habits. Which type of diet do you prefer? Why do you prefer this type of diet to other diet options?
Your journal entry must be at least 200 words in length. No references or citations are necessary.
2.
For each of the 3 major macromolecules (i.e., proteins, fats, and carbohydrates) explain in your own words at least 2 functions each has in the human body, plants, or animals. (10 pts)
Compare the nutrition label for ground beef below to the nutrition label from any canned vegetable you may have in your pantry. Name your chosen vegetable and describe three differences between the two labels as they relate to macromolecules. (Note: if you do not have any canned vegetables, you may use the internet to find a label.) (10 pts)
Reflect on what you learned in this Unit about a healthy diet. Then, explain why you think beef is or is not necessary for a balanced diet. (10 pts)

Conclusions (10 pints)
What are the major issues that you have identified in this project? (10 points)

Will 89o feel warmer or cooler after this adaptation? WHY?

Learning Goal: I’m working on a biology multi-part question and need support to help me learn.
Draw two graphs, each showing the activity of both Warm-Best and Cool-Best receptors. Indicate, on both graphs, the responses of these cells to 105o , 89o and 75o. The first graph should represent normal function. The second graph should show the change in the cells’ activity after the Selective Adaptation that occurs from holding your hand in hot 105o water for a prolonged period.
Will 89o feel warmer or cooler after this adaptation? WHY?
Upload your responses – as a PDF – by Thursday, July 21st 8am PST.
For an example of how your submission should look like, consult page 24 of the “Other Sensory Systems” lecture slides Download the “Other Sensory Systems” lecture slides. On that page, you can see the graph for the changes in cell activity after adapting to ice cold water. Your submission should have the same structure for the graphs, but illustrate adaptation to hot 105o water.
Sample or similiar is below

Do they clarify something that was previously unknown?

After reviewing the Read: Hearing Loss as a Risk Factor for Cognitive Impairment and Loss of Synapses in the Hippocampus, prepare a thread that incorporates the following information:
at least 750 words then post For each thread, students must support
their assertions with at least 2 scholarly citations in APA format. any sources cited must have been published within
the last five years. Acceptable sources include the textbook, the Bible, and peer review journal
articles.
Provide a brief overview of the main points and conclusions of the article. Only pertinent points should be stated – there is no need to include details of methods unless directly related to a main conclusion. Every result does not need to be included, if not pertinent to the thrust of your discussion. However, there must be sufficient explanation to demonstrate an understanding of the paper. Simply summarizing the abstract is not acceptable.
What is the main novelty of this article? Why are the results novel? What was previously known, and how do the results expand on previous knowledge? Why are these results an addition to the current field? Do they clarify something that was previously unknown? This section MUST incorporate outside research and not just recapitulate the authors’ discussion.
What is/are the outstanding question(s) stemming from this article? This section MUST incorporate outside research that puts the current study in perspective of the field. It must go beyond the discussion of the current article being reviewed, and not just summarize their discussion points. Based on the main novelty of the article, what is the next step? What missing information still needs to be researched? Make sure you focus your discussion of outstanding questions around the main novel results.
