Other / HEALTH DISPARITIES - WRITING INTENSIVE

Were you surprised by how many or how few of the statements you agreed with?

For this activity, students will be provided a list of statements that are often viewed as “privileges” in society. It is important to keep in mind that a privilege is a societal benefit that someone receives due to a personal characteristic or attribute. In today’s society, privilege is often seen as something that a person enjoys but has not necessarily earned, and may not deserve. It may be helpful to reframe privilege as a benefit that only some people have, but that would benefit everyone. Please keep in mind that privilege is the fault of society. Therefore, it is the responsibility of society to ensure that everyone can enjoy privilege equitably, regardless of personal characteristics.
Please review the list of statements provided to students and consider how many of them are true for you. Then complete a 400-600 word reflective essay that responds to at least three of the following prompts.
Prompt:
Before this activity, would you have considered the statements identified on the list as “privileges”? Which ones surprised you? Which ones did you not think of as being privileges?
Were you surprised by how many or how few of the statements you agreed with? Why or why not?
What are 1 or 2 other statements you would add to the list?
What are some important things to keep in mind about privilege? How do you believe privilege should be addressed in terms of health inequity in the US?
